Review: The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

Author: Laura Dave

Released: May 4, 2021
Received: Own (BOTM)
Warnings: secrets, stalking

The Last Thing He Told Me is Laura Dave’s latest thriller, one that combines family drama with a mystery of epic proportions. This was one of my BOTM picks for May, and I am so excited to have enjoyed it as much as I did!

On the day that her husband, Owen Michaels, went missing, Hannah Hall got a note. The note simply stated: protect her. There was no doubt in Hannah’s mind about what the note could have meant, though there’s no way she could have anticipated the rabbit hole it was about to send her down.

All Hannah knows is that her husband has gone missing, the FBI is investigating his place of work, and that she has to protect his daughter. At all costs.

“This is the terrible thing about a tragedy. It isn’t with you every minute. You forget it, and then you remember it again.”

I feel like it’s been a hot minute since a thriller actually kept me on the edge of my seat, but that is what happened with The Last Thing He Told Me. I was so curious to know the full story of Michael Owns and what it was that made him run.

Needless to say, I found myself pretty invested in the story, as well as the characters involved. It’s hard not to feel for Hannah and Bailey, who were left in the dust and left to try and put the puzzle pieces together based on very little information.

“Einstein said, So far as the theories of mathematics are about reality, they are not certain; so far as they are certain, they are not about reality.”

It’s everything that I’ve been looking for in a thriller, come to think of it. No wonder I enjoyed it so much! I was so blown away by some of the twists and turns that occurred within these pages, making it one of my favorite thrillers to come out this year.

The Last Thing He Told Me was a perfect standalone novel, and now I’m going to be keeping an eye out for whatever Laura Dave writes next.
