Book Summary:
A man is dead. There’s no denying that – his head is sitting right there on the table. There are seven potential suspects, all of whom would have an excellent reason to want this man dead. Naturally, they all claim it wasn’t them.
Delving into the murder will out their secrets, and his along with them. Rather than making the case clearer, it merely adds more motives to the pile. Who didn’t want this man dead?
My Review:
Whodunnit mysteries are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Speak of the Devil certainly fits that bill, with one man dead and half a dozen people who could have wanted him that way. It’s the perfect fit for this craving.
Speak of the Devil has multiple perspectives, as you might have guessed from the description. I was pleasantly surprised by how much we got to know each character/perspective. That always makes the world feel more alive and real. Plus, all the bouncing around helped to keep the pacing stable and fast.
This novel does deal with the heavier subject matter. Consider the type of person that multiple people might want to kill, and you’ll probably know what might have happened. Just in case, Speak of the Devil touches on subjects like rape, police negligence, suicide, etc. Be sure to check a full content warning list before diving in.
