What was I meant to do? Is another short story written by Seanan McGuire, and it fits in her InCryptid series. It’s set between the events of the first and second novels (Discount Armageddon and Midnight Blue-Light Special), but it doesn’t follow any of the main characters that we’re used to.

Nope, this is the story of Boogeyman Dave. He made a choice throughout Discount Armageddon. One that angered the Prices and forced him to give up the life of relative luxury he had gotten so used to.

This is his story of being on the run. It’s an exciting read, if for no other reason than enjoying seeing how Boogeyman culture works. That part was absolutely fascinating, and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of that. I still have so many questions, especially about the Price family member that made a surprise (not so much?) appearance.
