The Summer After is the second novel written by Chandra Hoffman that I’ve had the pleasure of reading. This is a novel unlike anything else that I have read – and I’ve read a fair share of books in my time!
Even something as beautiful as love can spring from the wells of grief. Juliet and Dean fled to the Cayman Islands following the deaths of their spouses, only to find one another. The complex mixture of grief, loss, and romance would have been overwhelming on its own before throwing them knee-deep into a mystery.
As it turns out, these two grief-stricken lovers are running from more than one ghost, and it is time for their secrets to come out into the open.
“I want to bring back intention to my life. I want to do things from love, be present again.”
The Summer After is a heady mixture of emotions and convoluted histories. It’s like walking headfirst into an ocean full of pain, love, and secrets – with the very real threat of drowning. In case it wasn’t clear – I am highly recommending The Summer After.
Much like the other Hoffman novel I read (What Pretty Gets You), The Summer After immediately snagged my attention and refused to let go. It doesn’t hurt that this novel is full of emotional gut-punches and some surprising twists.
I’ve quickly learned that I love the way Chandra Hoffman portrays her characters – they feel so human. They’re flawed and dealing with real-world elements, making them feel like they could walk right off the pages and exist in our world.
You better believe that I’m going to be adding Chandra Hoffman to my list of authors to watch because there’s no way I’m missing out on anything else by her!
