Review: Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

Series: The Cosmere
Author: Brandon Sanderson
Publisher: Dragonsteel Entertainment
Released: January 1, 2023
Received: Kickstarter

Book Summary:

Tress has spent her entire life on a small island with emerald-green seas. The water, while beautiful, can be deadly. So it takes a certain level of courage to set out upon the sea. Yet that is exactly what Tress will do, despite the danger – and the laws forbidding her actions.

She will do whatever it takes to save her love from the Sorceress of the Midnight Sea. This Sorceress has stolen away the kindest person in the world, and Tress will sail across all the oceans and fight to get him back.

“It might be said that Tress had a way with words. In that her words tended to get in her way.”

My Review:

I remember when Brandon Sanderson announced Tress of the Emerald Sea and three other books (his super secret project line). It pretty much blew up the internet. It definitely destroyed Kickstarter, at least for a bit.

That being said, I intentionally avoided hearing too much about each novel. I want to go into these expecting a bit of a surprise, you know? So imagine my delight at what I found inside Tress of the Emerald Sea.

If you didn’t know, Tress of the Emerald Sea fits inside The Cosmere universe, though you honestly don’t need to be finished with the series to understand the events of this book.

This book was SO MUCH fun. I loved every second of it – the seas, the characters, the artwork. It’s all so perfect. No, really – there’s one art print in particular that I’m dying to buy. I’ll keep checking Howard Lyon’s (the artist) website in the hope that he’ll add it to the shop.

This is a fantastical world in which determination and kindness can turn dreams into reality. It has dangerous spores, talking rats, and even a dragon under the sea. What more could you ask for?
