A Godly Bar Brawl in Thor: Metal Gods Episode 6

Thor: Metal Gods Episode 6 continues Serial Box’s epic story following Thor Odinson. This musically inclined series is unique for a variety of reasons. Not least of which is the format that it is being told through.

Real quick, for those that haven’t heard of this series or seen my previous reviews: Thor: Metal Gods is the first in several Marvel series hitting Serial Box (now Realm). This platform was designed to release novels in episode format, with a new one dropping each week. You can either read the episode or listen to the narration (or do what I do and check out both).

Last we saw, Thor was on the hunt for his mischievous brother, Loki, thanks to his connection to the quest. That is a task easier said than done, as evidenced by what follows in this episode. On the bright side, that means that this was an action-packed read (or listen) for the fans.

A Memorable Battle

Brian Keene delivered us quite an action-filled adventure in Thor: Metal Gods Episode 6. We all know that chaos follows in Loki’s wake. But we also know that Thor can hold his own in a battle. Seeing the two merge is always a blast – no pun intended.

Honestly, there was a lot to enjoy in this episode. A lot of it felt more like the Thor series we’re familiar with, as Thor takes on countless enemies at once. Sure, his allies may be different, but that just adds to the intrigue.

This episode also included a whole bunch of cameos or references to the larger Marvel universe. I won’t spoil the cameos here, but I will say that they were a huge surprise for me. But seriously hilarious. That sounds out of place in the context of a fight, but it fits in rather nicely.

There were some key differences made for this plot arc, and on the whole, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. This story is being told in a new format, and that means artistic liberties can be taken. Just look at the differences between the comics and the movies – yet people still love both. That’s how I’m viewing this series. Fun, but different.

Narration

Thor: Metal Gods Episode 6 arguably has some of the best audio features in the series (thus far). Daniel Gillies was back at the helm as the narrator, and as I mentioned before, he’s really getting into the swing of things here. Each character has a unique sound and voice, making it clear who Gillies is speaking as at any given time.

More than that, though, this fight lent really well to the narration. There was so much going on, with lots to listen to and anticipate. The balance of humor rang out quite nicely in Gillies’ voice as well, which was a nice bonus.

One of the highlights for this audiobook chapter had to be the sound effects. Previously they were a nice touch, and while they amused me, I was not blown away either. Here I felt like a balance had been struck. The effects went along very nicely with each event in the fight itself, making all of the difference.

Conclusion

Thor: Metal Gods Episode 6 was another fun and exciting addition to this series. I’m very much looking forward to seeing where this journey will go next—especially given some of the surprising character twists that have been revealed so far.

The more I read of Thor: Metal Gods, the more excited I find myself getting about the future series that Serial Box has promised. So far, I’ve heard of at least three: Black Widow, Jessica Jones, and Black Panther. And I, for one, cannot wait for more news on any one of them.
