Book Summary:

Nancy found a home in the Halls of the Dead, a heavily misunderstood place, even by the other students of Eleanor West’s School for Wayward Children. She was fortunate enough to find her way back to this home, many moons ago.

Only now, her world is in grave danger, and the only people she can count on are her fellow students, if they’re willing. When it comes to quests, this group is always willing, but what could threaten the Halls of the Dead?

My Review:

Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series is such a delight, partially because of the sheer variety of stories that have folded into this world. That said, there is something so comforting about returning to a beloved character. Nancy was my first favorite, so having her come around for another adventure made my heart happy.

Through Gates of Garnet and Gold is a fascinating read. It does a fantastic job of exploring different types of happiness and normal; it highlights how all of our needs are different, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It also highlights the corruption and wickedness that lurk under the surface, even with all these magical doors around.

The stakes may have been incredibly high for the inhabitants of the Halls of the Dead, but I found the tale to be incredibly soothing. Perhaps I was just happy to see this particular group come together again (with a new addition in the mix).

That said, Through Gates of Garnet and Gold did leave me with many questions. It’s going to be a long year waiting for the next installment. On the bright side, I know it’ll be worth it.

Highlights:

  • Urban Fantasy
  • Magical Worlds
  • Doorways to the Unknown
