4 1/2 kitties

Book Summary:

Adrienne Shaw has many regrets in life, starting with how distant she has become from her sister. It’s that regret that’s been pulled to the forefront of her life, since Chiara has gone missing. When the police and even Chiara’s husband seem to give up, Adrienne is determined to dig up the truth.

She knows, deep in her gut, that this mom-influencer weekend had something to do with Chiara’s disappearance. So she does what nobody else will do, picking up a cover that’ll get her into the next camp. Surely history won’t repeat itself here.

My Review:

It’s safe to say that Follow Me is a strange mix of themes and elements. It’s a murder mystery with an unreliable (and unlikable) main character, a game of cat-and-mouse, and also open commentary on social media. It tried to do so much in a relatively limited time, and that means some bits worked better than others.

Follow Me is very much a satirical novel about social media addiction and influencers. As such, it does play with some themes that’ll make the average reader cringe. It does so in a way that is borderline playful, but doesn’t quite hit the mark. I think the author could have leaned into the dark comedy element a bit more, to make it more pronounced (and thus more obvious).

The biggest problem, for me, was Adrienne. An unlikable protagonist can work, but she was a little too all over the place for this particular tale to hit. It was still an interesting story. I do wish that the ending was slightly more spread out, as there is hidden potential in some of the twists and reveals.

Overall, Follow Me is a strange but compelling read. It plays with a lot of themes and isn’t afraid to speak its mind about the corruptive nature of social media and societal expectations.
