Book Summary:
Cavilla Ramirez was having a pretty standard teenage experience, focused on high school and her hobbies, until her life was flipped upside down. In the span of a few months, tragedy kept striking those around her.
Now, Cavilla is largely alone, minus her aunt, who keeps holding back secrets. Well, that’s not entirely true, as the ghosts keep her company. These spectral apparitions need Cavilla’s help to feel at peace, so she’s gonna have to put her sleuthing hat on.
My Review:
Between the Living and the Dead is a fast-paced but often emotionally tense read. It blends coming-of-age drama with paranormal investigations, along with a dash of family lore and history, creating a compelling and wholly unique adventure.
As a massive paranormal fan, I had thought that I had seen it all, but surprises like Between the Living and the Dead help remind me that isn’t the case. I really enjoyed the sometimes darker adventure this novella portrayed.
Cavilla’s story is full of tragedy, and much of that happens before readers ever get the chance to pick up the book. Personally, I’m grateful for the author’s decision to skip forward to that point in time. It allowed us to get into the meat of the story, and honestly, it also probably saved us all a lot of tears.
Despite everything Cavilla has gone through, she’s a spark of light in her world, and that shines through in the writing. This story could very well have been deeply depressing, but I walked away feeling uplifted and content.
The magical worlds explored are possibly some of my favorite parts, and I could easily see this part becoming a longer-running series. Actually, I can more than see it – I’m hoping for it!
If paranormal haunts and investigations are your cup of tea, you will likely enjoy what Between the Living and the Dead has to offer. It may draw on familiar themes and tropes, but the result is entirely unexpected.
