Book Summary:
Beckett Bowery lived a magical life in a small town, right up until college. Then her life turned upside down. She left the town as quickly as she could, knowing that they would never believe her side of the story.
Years later, Beckett is back, and this is not what she hoped for or wanted. Her daughter has decided Wyatt College is the place for her, and that means dredging up the past. For a normal family, that past would be little more than an old embarrassment. For this family, it could become very dangerous indeed.
My Review:
I’ve read three or four Megan Miranda novels by this point, so I think I can safely say that her novels always find a way to surprise me. You Belong Here is no exception. Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate that cover?
At its core, You Belong Here is an academic suspense novel, though it’s the setting that makes it academic. Since the protagonist is not the student (anymore), don’t count on seeing drama unfold within the classroom.
Instead, all of the drama and danger takes place largely outdoors. The atmospheric way in which the setting and world are described is enough to send chills down the spine. Throw in the carefully laid breadcrumbs leading to the big reveal, and it’s the sort of thriller you can’t put down.
There are a few major twists in this novel. Naturally, some of them are teased from the beginning, while others are simply shocking through and through. It’s the right balance of mystery.
That said, there were a couple of subplots that I personally didn’t connect to, keeping me from loving this thriller as much as I could have. Maybe that’s personal preference, so I’d still say You Belong Here is worth reading.
