Book Summary:
The world changed forever when interdimensional portals began popping up all over. Overnight, people learned to fear all new types of monsters. It wasn’t all bad, as people quickly realized that they had talents capable of lending a hand in this new world.
Adaline is one such person. She’s an Accessor Talent, meaning that she can spot valuable items within these dungeons without having to get too close. This ability is enough to let her pay the bills and keep her children fed, happy, and safe (mostly). At this point, the whole dungeon-crawling thing has become sort of routine, and that means something is about to go horribly wrong.
My Review:
House Andrews never disappoints! The Inheritance is Ilona Andrews’ take on LitRPG adventures, and I am here for it. If you’re looking for a fantastical adventure with plenty of action, a determined female lead, and lots of strange revelations, this is the book for you!
In a way, The Inheritance is a little bit of an urban fantasy series, crossed with sci-fi (aliens, monsters, what have you) and dystopian (world-shattering events, torn families, etc.) elements rolled into one. However, that description doesn’t really do the novel justice, I promise!
There’s a lot I want to say about the world of The Inheritance, from the Talents to the characters and pretty much every detail in between. It’s bold and adventurous and is absolutely full to the brim of action. In other words, it’s a lot, and I mean that in the best way possible.
The magical systems are carefully thought out; they are creative takes on a familiar concept. They don’t feel overdone, but the authors also know that they didn’t have to reinvent the wheel here. Meanwhile, the characters are where this story really begins to shine, especially Ada. Elias gets more time to shine later in the novel, and we all know he’s going to play a larger role in future additions to the series.
In addition to being a delightful and heavy-hitting action fantasy novel, The Inheritance has lots of details for Ilona Andrews fans. Their previous worlds have always been quite expansive, and there are details worth keeping an eye open for. That’s all I’ll say on that matter, but we fans really appreciate the extra level of care here.
The Inheritance is a phenomenal read from start to finish. The ending alone is supremely satisfying, though it’s enough to leave readers eager for the next installment in the series.
