Book Summary:
Doric has always known she was different, but the Emerald Enclave helped her embrace that difference, rather than hiding it. As a Tiefling, she was cast from her family, but fortunately was found by the Neverwinter Woods Elves.
Here, she grew up and had a life for herself, before one day realizing that she may have more to offer to her found family. As a druid, Doric has the potential to help create change, but first, she must master her abilities.
My Review:
If you loved Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and wish there was more (I know I do), good news! The Druid’s Call is set in the same story/universe and is even a prequel to the movie. It follows Doric’s origin story.
Let me preface this review by saying that I am far from a DnD expert. I haven’t played the game (tabletop or video), but I loved the movie and adore E.K. Johnston, so obviously I had to read The Druid’s Call. However, I cannot comment on how accurate the portrayal is when it comes to Druids or the like.
Doric’s story is split into two distinct timelines. There’s her present (which is set before the movie), which involves her life with the Neverwinter Woods Elves and her quest to become a Druid. Then there’s her past, which comes in flashbacks and, while depressing, has almost a dreamlike quality to how it’s told.
Overall, I found Doric’s adventure to be fascinating. Again, I can’t comment on how accurate it is, but it was fun to read! I always wondered about her shapes and other abilities, so this answered some of those questions. Likewise, there’s a recurring joke involving Simon, which tickled my funny bone. That alone made this book worth reading if you ask me.
Highlights:
- Prequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
- Doric’s Story
- Druid Drama & Shenanigans
- Some Fun at Simon’s Expense
