It’s that time of the month again! Time to talk about our monthly selections for subscriptions like BOTM (Book of the Month) and Aardvark Book Club! I’m currently enrolled in both, mostly because I’m indecisive. I also love that both boxes tend to offer VERY different selections.
In both subscription services, you can choose from a selection of books each month. BOTM will offer between five and seven new picks a month (plus a selection of add-ons) with a cap of five books per box. Aardvark offers a selection of five or six books and caps readers at three books a box.
May’s BOTM choices are:
- The Man Made of Smoke (Thriller)
- Home of the American Circus (Contemporary Fiction)
- The Names (Contemporary Fiction)
- The Bombshell (Literary Fiction)
- Silver Elite (Fantasy)
- Alive Day (Memoir)

My Choices:
- Silver Elite – So, I was a bit torn here. Silver Elite looks SO PRETTY, and I love that BOTM went all out with the sprayed edges. I wish it didn’t come at an extra cost to readers ($2.99, I think), but I ended up going for it anyway. It’s the first in a dystopian trilogy, so a.) I hope I love it. b.) I hope BOTM will give the other 2 special editions to match.
- The Man Made of Smoke – I promised myself I would try to stick to only 3 books from BOTM, but I ended up getting swayed by Alex North’s latest novel. Hopefully, that wasn’t a mistake (it has good reviews so far).
- Aftertaste (New add-on) – It’s described as being similar to Under the Whispering Door, which was enough to get my curiosity going. It’s a paranormal fantasy, and I cannot wait to read it.
- The Amalfi Curse (New add-on) – I’ve had The Amalfi Curse in my BOTM cart for a week now, basically the moment I learned it was an add-on, I threw it in. I love Sarah Penner and look forward to reading her next novel.
May’s Aardvark choices are:
- When the Wolf Comes Home (Horror)*
- Immaculate Conception (Sci-Fi)
- The Pretender (Historical Fiction)
- Julie Chan Is Dead (Thriller)
- The Original Daughter (Literary Fiction)
- When the Tides Held the Moon (Fantasy)

My Choices:
- Julie Chan Is Dead – I was really torn between this one and Immaculate Conception, but ultimately I decided to go with the thriller. My book box thrillers usually go through many hands, so it always feels like the best buy for my buck.
- When the Tides Held the Moon – I’m always more inclined to pick up debut books in subscription boxes – it’s a great way to find new authors. I really liked the look of this one, plus it promises to be an “unforgettable New York fairytale,” which is enough for me!
