Seanan McGuire has written some of the most captivating portal fantasies out there (I’m talking about Wayward Children). This isn’t Wayward Children. While In the Land of Rainbows and Ash is a portal fantasy…it’s pretty dark (even darker than Wayward Children, which is saying something!).
That said, it is also wonderful. Not all wonderful stories have to have happy endings, after all. I feel this is a point Seanan McGuire has played with for quite some time. So really, this short story shouldn’t be all that shocking for readers.
This is the kind of story that transports readers but leaves them with a somber lesson. It will also make one think – about the hidden costs of magical realms and being careful of what we wish for.
