Book Summary:
Dorothy Gentleman is a talented detective on board the HMS Fairweather. She and her fellow passengers are on a very long journey to a new planet, but that promise doesn’t stop crime from occurring. Dorothy’s career path is proof of that.
Enter the most surprising twist in Dorothy’s case files thus far: a baby! No, seriously. No new children have appeared in over three hundred years, by intention. This is not a surprise that the ship, nor its detectives, were prepared for.
My Review:
The Dorothy Gentleman series has quickly become one of my new favorites. It’s basically a cozy mystery in space, complete with heavy sci-fi elements. What more could one possibly ask for? Obviously, I was delighted at the news of Nobody’s Baby, because I already can’t get enough.
That said, I was not expecting the second installment of this series to jump straight to “surprise baby.” It’s a bit comical, both literally and figuratively. The idea of a baby mystery (instead of a murder mystery) is entertaining enough. Then throw in how all the characters react to this new mystery; it was pretty amazing.
Obviously, this is a mystery, not a running joke, so there actually are serious undertones to follow in this novella. It makes for a solid and worthwhile read. I love that Olivia Waite managed to surprise us pretty early in the series, reminding us that one must always stay on one’s toes when dealing with a space mystery.
