3 1/2 kitties

Book Summary:

The world has changed greatly over the last few years. Those who remain survive within walled cities run by AI and automation. Enter Saint Enita Malovis, a descendant of those who made the biggest sacrifices to make this survival possible.

Unlike the other Sainted, Enita has never lost sight of her mission. She’s a bio-prosthetic surgeon who helps those without means. She gives back as much as she takes, if not more. However, the city’s corruption is reaching a head, and something must be done about it.

My Review:

I read the description of We Lived on the Horizon and knew that I had to read it. It sounded both dark and fascinating, which is exactly how I want my dystopian novels to feel. That said, I didn’t fall head over heels for this novel the way I hoped, but I can still see the potential at its core.

There are so many moving parts in We Lived on the Horizon. There’s a complex political system, city, augments, characters galore, sentient constructs, inequality and classism, you name it. These elements add so many layers to the story as a whole.

I would have loved nothing more than to see this novel explore the AI and nanobot surgery some more. I also would have liked to explore Nix as a character and construct more. I think these are the reasons I didn’t love this book as much as I had hoped, because I still had so many unanswered questions by the end.

We Lived on the Horizon has some heavy-hitting points and took bold risks. I love the core of this tale, and will 100% be watching Erika Swyler to see what she writes next.
