It’s that time again! Book Tag time! This book tag was created by vlogger Rincy Reads and was turned into a blog version by Zezee With Books. Be sure to check out their content, it’s amazing!
The whole point of this book tag is to compare your current reading habits (and reading tastes) with how they were ten years ago. It’s usually fun looking back on the past, so this seemed like a fun challenge, especially as we near the end of the year (how did that happen?!).
What was your favorite book in 2014?

Magic Breaks
So, it’s no secret that I’m head over heels for the Kate Daniels world. Thus, it’s no surprise that the latest release was my top book of 2014. Magic Breaks was particularly anticipated, given all the events Kate had gone through in the last book. Plus, we all knew that the war was brewing, and I was eager to see what happened next.
What is your favorite book of 2024?

The Book of Ile-Rien: The Elements of Fire & The Death of the Necromancer
The Book of Ile-Rien is technically two books in one: The Elements of Fire and The Death of the Necromancer. They were originally published years ago but were recently re-formatted, edited, and re-packaged to make them a shiny new gift for readers.
I’ve been meaning to go through all of Martha Wells’ backlog (and am slowly working on it, I swear), so this was an excellent incentive for me. I got to read two books in one, knock out some of the backlog, and support Martha Wells all in one go.
What was your least favorite book in 2014?
You know what? I’m actually going to pass on this one. I honestly can’t remember disliking a book enough to trash it a decade later. At least, not a book that came out in 2014! I’m sure other years/books would make me feel differently.
What was your least favorite book in 2024?

Incidents Around the House
Sorry! Sorry. I know this opinion is controversial, but I just didn’t love Incidents Around the House the way I wanted to. It was a big swing, and I respect the heck out of that. But the whole time I was reading it, I was just begging for it to end, and that was not a great experience for a reader.
What is a book published in 2014 that you still want to read?

The Unbound
I try to make a habit of reading through new favorite author’s backlogs. I’m still working on Victoria Scwhab’s archive (see what I did there?). That said, I actually have had this series on my TBR list since they were released. Oops.
What is a book published in 2024 that you want to get before 2025?

To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods
The stunning cover caught my attention here, so I instantly added it to my TBR. I would still like the chance to read it before the year is out. We’ll have to see how it goes, I suppose.
What is a genre you used to read a lot of that you don’t read as much of anymore?
Urban Fantasy
Okay, don’t get me wrong – I still LOVE urban fantasy. But that trend has passed, so publishers are no longer printing under that subgenre. That’s why I’m not reading as much of it as I had (or would like).
What is a new genre you’ve discovered since 2014?
Isekai
I’ll confess: I love a good isekai. Truck-kun aside, I find the worlds and stories to be really compelling. I know there’s always that risk of repetition (there always is when dealing with a specific trope), but a few of my favorite series from the past two years have been isekai – including my current obsession (Villains Are Destined to Die).
What is a reading or book habit you are hoping to leave behind in this decade?
Hrm. Pressuring myself to read? As a reviewer, there’s always this background pressure to read, take notes, and get through the backlog. It’s not a great place to be, mentally speaking. I’m trying to learn how to be kinder to myself, but it’s a process.
What is a new reading goal or habit you want to create in the upcoming decade?
That’s a great question! Probably allowing more breaks while I read (instead of sitting or hours on end until I finish a book).
