Summary:
Tildy Sullivan is the perpetual middle child. She may come from an elite Manhattan family, but she knows what it’s like to feel left on the outside. Perhaps that’s why her family’s financial decline doesn’t feel so shocking to her.
While the family’s financial woes don’t weigh on Tildy, something else does. The biggest regret of her life is walking away from the man she quite possibly loved. Is it too late to face reality and get him back? Or will she fall into the temptation of a digital world?
Review:
Oh wow. I had a feeling that I would love The States – and I wasn’t wrong! This book is perfect for readers who love science fiction and Jane Austen, as it perfectly merges the two into one harmonious tale.
Even if you know the classic story The States is based upon, this novel will surprise you. It certainly surprised me! The inclusion of a digital world (that is essentially Tidly’s perfect version of reality) will make you question everything.
Likewise, I really enjoyed Norah Woodsy’s writing. The world came to life—or should I say, both worlds came to life—the real and the digital, weaving back and forth. It was a compelling read, made all the more compelling thanks to Tildy’s character.
If you’re looking for a character-driven story with a few surprises in store, The States is the book for you.
