The Dust of Rhll, by J.F. Meskimen, is somehow a novel that feels so modern and new while feeling very retro. If you’re looking for a unique sort of fantasy read, consider checking this one out!

There lies a fantasy world torn asunder by greed and violence. In this world, there exists a mad emperor. He is cruel and unafraid to order his army to do horrible things, including starting all sorts of new wars.

Garong is the mad emperor’s Commander, and he has most recently been sent on a quest to find an ancient relic that only the mad believe in. Hence the reason he’s been sent on this quest, as his emperor is convinced it really is out there, hidden from prying eyes.

“I have a strange opportunity in front of me, and it could mean a lot for both of us.”

If there’s one thing I can say about The Dust of Rhll, it is that it is an incredibly unique read. One that almost defies describing. It was actually a fascinating balance; some parts felt familiar (that retro fantasy vibe I mentioned earlier), yet so much of it felt raw and new.

In that sense, this was a book that I very much was not expecting. Nor was I prepared for what I found inside. Personally, I love it when a book manages to surprise me, so it was a pleasant experience for me.

However, I will mention that The Dust of Rhll is a fairly dark and heavy book. If you’re unsure of what I mean, take a look at the sample available on Reedsy, that should give readers a better idea of what they’re in for.

Despite the graphic nature of this read, I’ll admit there was something almost relaxing about The Dust of Rhll. Paradoxical, I know. I think it was J.F. Meskimen’s writing style. It read as something akin to prose and as beautifully done. I’m looking forward to seeing what Meskimen comes up with next.
