Hi, my name is Cat, and I have an absurd number of bookmarks.

The Bookmark Hoard

There’s no denying the usefulness of a bookmark. It saves your spot without damaging the book; what more could one ask for? The problem is that, like many readers, I tend to accumulate them.

In my defense, some of them just show up at my door. After all, many of my book subscriptions tend to send them along. BOTM sends one with every box, and Aardvark sends one for every book (my cats LOVE playing with those, so they quickly get stolen).

Likewise, I tend to get gifted many bookmarks. Again, I’m sure this isn’t unusual. These are sentimental; for me, they tend to get tucked away in a safe space. Thus, they don’t get used.

Oodles and Oodles of Bookmarks

I use a few bookmarks consistently. I’ll use the BOTM bookmarks until they fall apart. I try to use the Aardvark bookmarks – until they get stolen. But that means pretty much all of my “pretty” bookmarks get unused.

Some of the nicer ones get displayed on my shelves. Usually, these are metal or wood because they display better. They’re also not practical to use (in my mind) in books because they’re a little too thick.

So, where do all the other bookmarks go? Well…I used to store them all in one of those cute book-shaped tins…until it ran out of space. Then I tucked the spares in a bookish mug. That worked pretty well for a month.

At this point, I believe I have two book tins dedicated just to bookmarks, plus the mug, and then there’s a little side table drawer full of them. I wish I were kidding. To be fair, the side table one is where I tend to pull from when I need to replace my “in use” bookmark, so that one is always in flux.

What about you? How many bookmarks do you have?
